Visitors Can Now Digg Images

7th December 2007

Digg has finally launched an image section where the URL of a submitted story is crawled to generate thumbnails. The new section of the popular social news site does away with uploading hyperlinks to images. Image bookmarking will also be a lot easier now.

To keep in tandem with this new section, the category system of Digg has also been reconfigured. Now users can submit images, video and news into any category. However, it would be better to get back the subcategories bar instead of the click-drop-down-menu that we get to see now.

The new image section does look cool but the absence of an accompanying description might become an irritation in the future when users get misled by sensationalist headlines and taglines. Alternatively Digg could expand the image or pop up an overlay of the image when a visitor hovers over the thumbnail images. At the end of the day, though, a picture still remains worth a thousand words!
