In a press conference held on Thursday, Microsoft admitted that their search services would bring in less revenue than they had hoped over the next 2 years. The software giant had predicted revenue from Internet services to grow by as much as 11%. However, in light of recent losses in market share they have had to tone down their predictions to just 3-8% increase in sales.
The ComScore report of search engine ratings for December showed Microsoft market share had fallen half a percentage point to 10.5% of US web queries, whereas Google and Yahoo! both gained market share.
Nevertheless, MSN’s advertising revenue increased $462 million last quarter, marking a 20% increase from the same period last year. The surge, however, was due to growth in display advertising rather than search.
